Raised as Catholic and attended St. Mary’s Catholic schools, until high school when she went to Dubuque High School. Daughter, Yvonne Phyllis (Burgess) (Levesque), and Granddaughter, Phyllis Jean Frederick (Hyden) were named after her. Palen ancestors emigrated from Luxembourg in 1855. Phylis met Harry William Linderman at Dubuque High School. He was a Lutheran, not a Catholic.
Daughter of Frank Joseph Palen & Emma Elsie Clausen Palen. Pianist, Artist, Homemaker, and Singer. She remodeled their homes and they resold them for a profit. She and my grandfather moved around a lot, because he was a salesman. Wife of Harry “Billy” William Linderman. Co-owned “Linbar, Inc.” in Houston, Harris county, Texas from 1943 – 1963. Grandpa was a Combustion Engineer, and a Entrepreneur. They resided at 4002 Arnold Street, Houston, Texas 77005, West University Place, from 1943-1963.
My Grandmother and Grandfather were members of the First United Methodist Church-Downtown, at 1320 Main Street, Houston, Harris, Texas, up until 1963.
Co-owned Saturday’s Tavern, in Gayhill, Washington, Texas during the 1950’s. They spent many a weekend there with their children and grandchildren. Died of Hodgkin’s Disease on 27 December 1963 at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Harris, Texas. Harry & Phyl were quite the host and hostess. They had many friends and family. They loved drinking, partying, and music. Phyl was the Mother of four girls, Yvonne Phyllis, Yvarra “Billie” Irene, Jean Marie and Patricia Mae “Patsy” Linderman.
Phylis & Harry loved to travel, and attended the Republican Conventions in 1956. They were both Republicans. Grandpa Harry Linderman was the 1954 Harris County Republican Chairman in Houston, Harris County, Texas. He was one of the Republican Delegates to the Republican Convention in San Francisco, California, 1954-1956, from Houston, Harris County, Texas.
Her family was so broken up by her death, that they couldn’t force themselves to visit her gravesite. There is no headstone for Grandma Linderman. She is buried underneath an old, Oak tree and beside a Doctor.

Frank Palen, attended a Catholic Church, there close to the River, the Cathedral of St. Raphael there on Bluff Street, and that is where his Grandson, Robert Leon Palen, was ordained on 7 June 1941.
Frank Joseph Palen and Emma Elsie (Claussen) Palen are buried beside each other in the Mount Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque, Dubuque, Iowa. Frank resided in Retirement Home near Mount Calvary Cemetery up until his death. His home at 1208 Jackson Street had been sold.

Frank and Emma Palen’s granddaughter, my mother, Jean Marie (Linderman) Frederick Mancill, lived to be 84, and she passed peacefully in her sleep on 9 March 2012, in Rosharon, Brazoria, Texas.
MY MOTHER JEAN MARIE LINDERMAN FREDERICK MANCILL, TOLD ME THAT FRANK JOSEPH PALEN WAS A KIND AND GENTLE SOUL. AND, THAT FRANK AND EMMA WERE VERY MUCH IN LOVE. FRANK WAS RAISED A CATHOLIC, AND HIS ANCESTORS WERE FROM LUXEMBOURG. FRANK WAS VERY TIGHT WITH THEIR MONEY, AND MADE EMMA DO WITHOUT SO THAT THEY COULD SAVE MONEY FOR THEIR OLD AGE, AND THEN SHE DIED BEFORE THEY COULD ENJOY IT. FRANK AND EMMA HAD QUITE A BIT OF MONEY, BUT THEY LOST IT ALL IN THE STOCK MARKET CRASH OF 1929, AND DURING THE GREAT DEPRESSION ERA IN BETWEEN 1929-1939. EMMA ELSIE CLAUSSEN PALEN DIED IN 1930. HOW AWFUL TO LOSE ALL YOUR LIFE SAVINGS ONE YEAR, AND THEN YOUR WIFE THE NEXT YEAR. SHE ALSO SAID THAT FRANK WAS AN INSPECTOR FOR THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, A CARPENTER, AND A MEMBER OF THE BPOE [BUILDER#39’S ASSOCIATION].
MY MOTHER SAID SHE REMEMBERED WHEN HER GRANDFATHER, FRANK PALEN, CAME ALL THE WAY TO HOUSTON, TEXAS TO HELP HIS DAUGHTER, PHYL and SON IN LAW, HARRY LINDERMAN, TO REMODEL THEIR HOUSE, IN THE 1950’S. I NEVER MET HIM, BUT HE LEFT HIS CRUCIFIX TO MY MOTHER AND ABOUT $500. DOLLARS, THAT SHE USED TO PAY FOR MY DELIVERY IN 1954.

As far as I know, I am the only one that cares about our family genealogy at all. My hope is that someday, someone will be interested in learning more about our family lineage. I never thought that I belonged or fit in before recovery but now I know that I do. I am loved, and wanted, and needed.
I do it to honor my ancestors, and to attempt to preserve their legacies for future generations. It is exciting to me to learn about my distant ancestors, that I knew nothing about.
Mother had always told me that we were German, Norwegian, and Luxembourger on her side and Moravian and Bohemian on Daddy’s side, but after thirty years of research and many hours and days of work, I have discovered that we also have Scottish, Irish, English, French, and Dutch. There are probably more that I have not found out about yet. The search continues…ODAT.

Leo emigrated in 1862 to New York then Caledonia, Houston, Minnesota, USA.
Leo and May married on 29 March 1864 in Dubuque, Dubuque, Iowa, USA.
Leo was a farmer, and May was a Homemaker.

My Grandmother, Phyllis Adele Eugenia (Palen) Linderman, was the daughter of Frank Joseph Palen and Emma Elsie (Claussen) Palen.
According to the U.S.Census for Caledonia, Houston County, Minnesota for 1880, May’s father, Frank Haupert (Hupert), resided with “Leo” and “May” Palen in 1880. He was listed as age 72, retired farmer from Luxembourg.
All were Catholic.

Kleeschencan be seen in various locations in cities and towns as he comes to the shops, and receives the children for photo sessions. “Kleeschen” is another name for St. Nicholas who comes from the heavens to reward children who have been good. His feast day is celebrated on December 6th. On evenings before this date, children put their shoes in front of their bedroom door, or on the windowsill, expecting St. Nicholas to fill them with a small gift during the night. Walking in Luxembourg
Luxembourg City is the capital city of he Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (Luxembourgish: Groussherzogtum Lëtzebuerg). The small landlocked country borders Belgium, France and Germany. We start our walk at the Luxembourg railway station (Gare Centrale). From the central station we walk North towards the old city centre. From the Adolphe Bridge (Pont Adolphe) we get a good view of the historic city with its walls ( 10:40 ). The old city is the main tourist attraction so we walk around there to see sights like the “Gothic Revival Cathedral of Notre Dame”, the town fortifications and also pass the Grand Ducal Palace. We have time to go down to the medival Grund district and the “neimënster” cultural hub. It’s time to get up and back to the train station again so we walk all the way South again and end the walk from where we started. St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Caledonia, Houston, Minnesota, USA, 1872
After a fire destroyed part of the St. John church in the 1950s, the two congregations merged instead of rebuilding the Irish church. The St. Peter’s church was renamed St. Mary’s in 1976. The history of these parishes are documented in the painted glass windows: John the Baptist is on the north side, St. Peter on the south side, and St. Mary is between them in the apse. The church served the Irish, German, and Luxemburgian Catholics who settled in the Caledonia area until 1870 when a second, German-speaking parish formed.
