Birth: Feb. 6, 1877
Caledonia
Houston County
Minnesota, USA

Death: Nov. 12, 1959
Rochester
Olmsted County
Minnesota, USA

Son of Leopold Frank “Leo” Palen and Mary “May” (Haupert) Palen of Luxembourg.

Emigrated in 1862 to Caledonia, Minnesota.

Baptized as Catholic in Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, 513 S Pine Street, Caledonia, MN, (507) 725-3804.

St. Mary’s had its beginnings in 1854, when Irish, German, and Luxembourg Catholics who settled in the Caledonia area began making plans to create a parish. The first step was to dedicate a cemetery, now known as Calvary Cemetery.

Having a school has also been important since the earliest days. The first Catholic school in Caledonia opened in 1870, and when there were two parishes, there were also two schools.

My maternal grandmother attended St. Mary’s Catholic School.
In 1927 the schools were merged into the Central Catholic School System, which included Loretto High School. Loretto closed in 1968.

A possible Explanation of the origin could be as per Jeannot Nehrenhausen:”Pletschette” comes from the Latin name “Pilatus”. This original Roman name has been affected by various phonetic changes during a period of more or less one thousand years (1st > 10th century A.D.). By the year 1000, this evolution came to an end, producing the definitive form “Pletschette”. During this millenarian period, “Pletschette” has been a Christian name (first name), that eventually became a family name about 1500.

We are the chosen…

We are the chosen. In each family, there is one who seems called to find the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again, to tell the family story and to feel that somehow they know and approve. Doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts, but instead, breathing life into all who have gone before. We are the storytellers of the tribe.

DEAR ANCESTOR

ANGEL MONUMENT, MORAVIA

******************************************************
DEAR ANCESTOR
Your tombstone stands among the rest;
Neglected and alone.
The name and date are chiseled out
On polished, marbled stone.
It reaches out to all who care
It is too late to mourn.
You did not know that I exist
You died and I was born.
Yet each of us are cells of you
In flesh, in blood, in bone.
Our blood contracts and beats a pulse
Entirely not our own.
Dear Ancestor, the place you filled
One hundred years ago
Spreads out among the ones you left
Who would have loved you so.
I wonder if you lived and loved,
I wonder if you knew
That someday I would find this spot,
And come to visit you.
